A MAN has been arrested after a car crashed into the side of a house and caused severe damage.

It happened at around 4.20 yesterday morning on The Crossway on Montagu Estate, Newcastle.

A blue BMW ploughed through a low stone wall before crashing into the corner of the semi on the road, near the junction with Coniscliffe Avenue.

The collision damaged the brickwork at the front of the property, however there were injuries.

Police said three people – a man and two women – were seen fleeing from the car.

A 24-year-old man has now been arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking.

A spokesman from Northumbria Police said: “At around 4.20am on Friday morning, police received a report that a vehicle had collided with a house on the Crossway in Kenton. The occupants of the blue BMW 330ci Sport have then abandoned it and fled the area.

“Police carried out a number of enquiries and a 24-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking. He remains in police custody at this time.”

Neighbours reported hearing a loud bang in the early hours.

One man said: “We were asleep in bed when we heard a big bang. We looked out and saw a car had gone into a house, it’s lights were flashing.

“It looked as though they tried to reverse the car but couldn’t. Then the police and fire brigade arrived. A helicopter was also out.”

Another resident, who lives nearby, added: “I didn’t hear anything at all and didn’t realise anything had happened until the morning.

“When I went out, I saw the damage at the house and some workmen were there clearing up all the bricks lying around. Someone told me there had been an accident. The damage looked quite bad.”
