That’s just champion, son

A NINE-YEAR-OLD boy who saved another child’s life while on holiday has been shortliste­d for a Chronicle Champions award.

Blake Stephenson was in the Loire Valley in France when a young boy nearly drowned in the swimming pool.

The County Durham schoolboy spotted the lifeless body at the bottom of the pool when he sprung into action to save him.

Quick-thinking Blake swam down the bottom of the pool to bring him up to the surface for help.

Blake, who attends Kirk Merrington Primary School, near Spennymoor, said: “I saw he was lying on the bottom so I prodded him with my foot to check he wasn’t just seeing how long he could stay down there, but he didn’t move. I knew I had to help him so I dived down to the bottom and pulled him back up to the top with me.

Blake was on holiday with his younger sister Tilly Stephenson, five, his mum Victoria Duke and her husband David in July when he showed off his life-saving skills.

Mum Victoria said she didn’t initially realised it was her son who had been the hero in all the commotion.

She said: “It was horrible really, we heard someone screaming we need to get a doctor or a nurse, the little boy had no pulse and my friend did CPR until the ambulance came.
