Shields maintain perfect start with superb bank holiday double

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

SOUTH Shields rounded off an impressive bank holiday weekend with a 3-1 win over Scarborough Athletic.

The Mariners were buoyed by a hard-fought 1-0 home win against Bamber Bridge on Saturday, and followed that up by claiming all three points at the Seadogs.

Shields made the perfect start, thanks to Matty Pattison’s first league goal for the club after seven minutes.

He benefited from some fine work down the left from Luke Sullivan, as the ex-Consett man pulled the ball back for the South African to finish.

The duo were involved again in the Mariners’ second goal eight minutes later.

Pattison’s corner was headed against the post by Darren Lough but Sullivan pounced on the rebound to crash home from close range.

The lead was halved three minutes later as Nathan Valentine converted a cross from the left.

But the hosts were reduced to ten men after 27 minutes when Max Wright was dismissed for kicking the ball into the South Shields supporters in a fit of frustration at a decision.

Julio Arca went close with a deflected free-kick but seven minutes after the break, Sullivan grabbed his second with a powerful finish.

It was all Shields from there but they had done enough and the travelling support toasted another win before heading back north.
