New keeper still priority for Benitez

NEWCASTLE United are still looking for another goalkeeper going into the final few days of the transfer window.

United remain in the hunt for a forward, midfielder and a defender, but the club have also spent the weekend looking at another senior goalkeeper.

The Magpies are trying to offload Tim Krul with a possible player-plus-cash offer for PSV Eindhoven’s Jeroen Zoet mooted in Holland.

Another name that has been considered by United is Crystal Palace’s 30-year-old stopper Wayne Hennessey while Rafa Benitez has never made a secret of his admiration for Napoli’s Pepe Reina, although Paris St Germain are also attempting to sign the 34-year-old.

Newcastle have also looked at Galatasaray’s Fernando Muslera but were put off by the Turkish Super Lig side’s demands for the player.

West Ham’s Adrian is also on Benitez’s shortlist. Roma offered Lukasz Skorupski last week but Newcastle knocked back the Italian club’s initial asking price for the Poland international.

Clearing Krul off the wage bill would be a major boost for Benitez but United will also listen to offers for Karl Darlow.

West Ham held an interest in the former Nottingham Forest keeper earlier in the summer and Newcastle would be open to a swap for Adrian.

If United do end the window with three senior goalkeepers in the squad it would clear the way for Freddie Woodman to head out on loan with League One Bury waiting to complete a loan move until January.

But Woodman may have to stay at United until January after being told by Benitez he is likely to be the third-choice keeper for the first half of the campaign.
