Be patient and let Grayson get on with it, Micky Gray tells fans

-

SUNDERLAND favourite Michael Gray has called for Black Cats fans to show patience following Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Sheffield United.

Sunderland supporters were vocal in their displeasure at their side’s performance in the defeat, with recent bad form seeing them slip to 20th in the Championship table.

‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt’, fans sang after Clayton Donaldson bagged his and his side’s second of the game. After, manager Simon Grayson sympathised with supporters, but asked for time to turn things around at a club that has been plagued by struggles on and off the pitch for a number of years.

And former players Gray agreed with the manager’s call.

He told Channel 5’s Championship highlights show: “It was another disappointing result at the Stadium of Light. Take nothing away from Sheffield United and the way they performed.

“Clayton Donaldson got a couple of goals, and it could have easily been three or four. I think Simon (Grayson) is still searching for that performance. They didn’t get off to the best of starts.

“I just don’t know where we turn it around as a Sunderland supporter. I think we’re a working progress – it’s not going to happen overnight.

“I think Simon is the right man. He’s obviously got his hands tied a little bit and can’t spend huge amounts of money. He’s tried to bring in the right kind of players for the football club but it’s going to take time, so we’re just going to have to be patient.”

Sunderland have an immediate opportunity to put things right after three consecutive league defeats. They host Nottingham Forest at the Stadium of Light this evening.
