Chief sports writer NEWCASTLE United boss Rafa Benitez has returned to Tyneside and been declared fit for work again by medics.

The Spaniard made his way back to Newcastle yesterday morning after being given the all-clear from his doctor and a blessing from his family and trusted aides.

Benitez travelled from Merseyside via train and returned to Benton for training today.

The former Real Madrid and Liverpool boss had been ruled out of Sunday’s win against Swansea City after failing to recover from a hernia operation.

United had laid on a helicopter to transport Benitez to Wales but he was advised against travelling to allow more time to recuperate.

Benitez’s assistant Paco Moreno had said after the win against the Swans: “Rafa stayed at home and it is what we wanted.

“We don’t want to risk anything with him, with his help, and also wanted to do the job for him and get Newcastle the three points.

“After the game he rang and he congratulated everybody, especially the players because they have done a massive job and we are very happy with the performance.

“He is very happy as well and hopefully he will be joining us next week.”

The Magpies will start the week in great spirits after their win against Swansea and will be aiming to make it three wins in a row when Mark Hughes brings his Stoke City team to Tyneside on Saturday.
