North battle pick of FA Cup qualifier ties

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

THE region will host one of the most attractive ties in the FA Cup second qualifying round as South Shields head to National League North club Darlington tomorrow.

The Mariners have doubts over defender Darren Lough and goalkeeper Liam Connell but are “hopeful” both players will be available.

There are three Northern League clubs left in the competition and one of them will have to face one of the FA Cup’s most famous giantkillers.

Altrincham – scourge of many a Football League club – will face Shildon at Dean Street.

Newcastle Benfield host Evo-Stik League club Ashton United and Mark Convery has a full squad to pick from ahead of the game.

Sunderland RCA boss Martin Swales does not have that luxury as they head to Scarborough Athletic.

The Wearside outfit are without Ross McNab and James Armstrong but are boosted by the return of Colin Larkin and Dylan Elliot.

In Northern League Division One, the top two sides meet at Craik Park as leaders Morpeth Town entertain West Auckland Town.

Third-placed Dunston UTS are missing Michael Pearson and Dan Capewell as they host struggling Billingham Synthonia.

Ashington are in good form as they head to Consett.

They travel awaiting news on the fitness of six players, including Craig Scott and Ben Harmison.

Tom Coulthard, James Ward and Dale Mulligan are unavailable for Stockton Town as they entertain Jarrow Roofing.

Marske United are without the suspended Craig Gott and Matty Crossen against visitors Penrith.

Crossen is representing England at the Cerebral Palsy World Cup in Argentina.

North Shields captain Kevin Hughes is an injury-doubt for their game at Guisborough Town but will have a late fitness test.

Craig Lynch is doubtful for Seaham Red Star’s game at Ryhope CW, but Chris McCabe does have Andrew Brown back in contention.

In Division Two, leaders Tow Law Town travel to Ryton and Crawcrook Albion, while Whickham could make it nine wins in a row as they face a trip to Welfare Park to face Bedlington Terriers.

Crook Town have a fully-fit squad for their game at Blyth AFC.

Their hosts are looking for a third win in a row.
