BIKES were seized by police after a crackdown on illegal motorcycle riding in parts of Tyneside.

Over the summer, people in Kenton and Cowgate in Newcastle complained about teenagers riding bikes unlawfully in the area.

The noise caused by the machines led to a surge in reports of anti-social behaviour, while many of the riders had no licence or insurance.

Northumbria Police said officers had been gathering intelligence and speaking to residents over recent weeks to tackle the problem.

And their efforts have now led to the seizure of three motorcycles and a car. Two people were also summoned to court for driving offences.

Eight council-owned properties were also visited by Your Homes Newcastle to begin tenancy enforcement procedures against troublemakers.

PC John Loraine, of the Newcastle North West neighbourhood policing team, said: “This operation came about due to an influx of reports of vehicles ranging from mini motors to pick-up trucks that were being used without any driving licences, insurance or protective equipment.

“Working in conjunction with Your Homes Newcastle we conducted homes visits to any people caught involved in this disorder and took appropriate action.

“This operation is ongoing and we will act on any information provided by members of the public and residents in the area where these vehicles are being used.

“People shouldn’t have to live with this sort of disorder happening, not only in the area which they live, but also the roads and paths which they use.

“The implications of these vehicles not being used correctly can be devastating to families and communities. Local residents should know we are doing everything we can to make people feel safe.”
