Say thanks to one of football’s nice guys when Hughton returns

-

CHRIS Hughton is well respected, adored even, for what he did on behalf of Newcastle.

Bounced around from pillar to post by Mike Ashley as a ready-made caretaker, he eventually landed the manager’s job, piloted United to promotion as champions, and walloped Sunderland 5-1 in a top-flight derby. Then he got the sack.

Geordies haven’t really had a chance to say “thank you” for that rapid return to the Premier League, but they will on Friday, October 6.

Because Hughton is coming back to front Wallsend Boys Club’s annual dinner at the Marriott Gosforth Park.

It’s a real coup for the club with Chris taking advantage of the international break to fly up from Brighton while ex-Wallsend player Tony Sealy is flying in from Hong Kong no less to join him. They were once team-mates at Brentford.

“We’ve made numerous requests to Chris to join us but all were politely turned down until now,” said Wallsend BC chairman Steve Dale. “I first approached him again six months ago and now he’s cleared his diary to come up. “It’s a real coup for the club. “Tony Sealy helped of course and it will be great for them to get together once again.

“Tony is now top man with the Hong Kong Football Club so chances of a reunion are somewhat limited.”

Hughton’s Brighton host Newcastle next weekend but he has always retained an affection for Geordies.

Chris is a thorough gentleman and I, like a lot of us, will welcome him with open arms come October 6.

Tables of 10 cost £600 with individual tickets £60 each and are available from Carl Walsh at carl. wallsendboysclub@gmail.com
