Great deal of optimism over Jamaal future
RAFA Benitez is confident Jamaal Lascelles will soon sign a new and improved contract at Newcastle United.
As reported exclusively last Monday by ChronicleLive, the Magpies have been in talks with Lascelles over an extension to his current deal and are keen to reward the former Nottingham Forest defender.
When asked about the possibility of a new contract for the 23-year-old, Benitez said today: “We are working hard on that but I don’t think it will be difficult.”
Benitez is also pleased with his decision to stick with Lascelles as captain.
The centre-back started the season out of the team but has bounced back with good performances, not least his matchwinning display against Swansea last weekend.
Benitez added: “Last year Jamaal was a very young captain and this year he is still young. He did well for me.
“He tried to manage the responsibility of the group and helped people.
“This year I had another conversation with him and it was clear he was keen to continue being captain.
“He was keen to help people and lead by example.”
Benitez also provided an update on injuries ahead of the clash with Stoke City.
He said: “We have just two injuries with Dummett and Haidara, the rest are all available.
“The timescale is not clear for Dummett.
“Each player is different but he will need time - when I say time I mean at least one month.”
