Boss Grayson insists: Wear improving slowly but surely

-

SIMON Grayson feels Sunderland are making progress under him - but admits it is slow, writes JAMES HUNTER.

To be one place above the relegation in their first season out of the Premier League for a decade might not seem like it to some, but Grayson was dealt a difficult hand when he took the job at the end of June. After losing 15 players from last term, he has spent just £1.25m in transfer fees on their 10 replacements. Yet even after the frustration of dropping points for the second time in a week, he could see the positives.

“Yes I do,” Grayson said when asked if he felt progress was being made after a 1-1 draw with Hull City.

“Everybody knows it is going to be a slow process and you have to take it step by step.

“The performances have been encouraging.

“The other night we played well against Forest and on Saturday we played well against a good team.

“We dominated for large parts, we just needed that second goal when we had our chances.

“We did not get it and a deflected goal is what ultimately put them back into the game.

“We know there is a lot of work to be done but it is a slow process.

“It is not something which can happen overnight and nothing is determined in September.

“We have injured players coming back over the next few weeks which will help us and make us stronger.”
