Halliday to the four as Heed finally win

BASEMENT side Gateshead A picked up their first win on the campaign when they defeated AFC Newbiggin in the first round of the Challenge Cup.

Matthew Halliday scored four times as the Heed came through 7-3.

Further goals arrived from Daniel Hailes, Brandon Slater and Elliott Forbes as the home side registered more in the one game than in all eight of their league fixtures to date.

Newbiggin replied through Jordan Watson, with a double, and Jordan Lashley.

Newcastle University ran out comfortabl­e 9-1 victors against a demoralise­d Grainger Park.

The hosts were four up inside the opening 10 minutes as Matthew Konadou-Yiadom notched a hattrick, David Robinson and Joe Blanch nabbed a brace apiece and Bryn Tennant and Keith Douglas, in the dying minutes, all scored.

The Park replied through a Chris Robinson penalty in the latter stages.

Leaders Seaton Delaval saw off a tricky challenge from hosts Percy Main, edging a five-goal game 3-2 .

Goals from Ryan Gladstone, Michael Trodd and Mark McDonnell had the visitors three up at the break before a second-half brace of penalties from Sam Thompson gave the home side hope of a late leveller.

North Shields Athletic suffered a heavy reversal at home to Whitley Bay A - the visitors winning 6-1 after the sides were level at the break.

Jordan Scarr cancelled out Chris Brennan’s opener. A quick double from Andy Robertson gave the Bay control before late strikes from Trae Rowlandson, Trueman Hubb and Chris Zoldan sealed progressio­n.

Gateshead Rutherford also went through with a 3-1 success at Northbank Carlisle.

The Cumbrians had led through a Ricky James strike on 15 minutes before second-half efforts from Dylan Houwarth, Gary Brown and Davey Chambers saw Rutherford triumph.

Ponteland went through on the back of a 2-1 home win over Wallington, all three counters coming in the second half.

Alex Benjamin grabbed the winner after a Sam Walton penalty had kept Wallington in the game following Lee Gustard’s opener.

Birtley needed extra time to dismiss hosts Shankhouse.

They eventually progressed 5-2 after the pair were level at 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Layton Bruce and Christophe­r Marshall notched for the hosts, Roberts and Whybrow replying before a brace from Andy Hall and a further strike from Matty Baldwin enabled Birtley to progress.

Ashington Colliers prevailed 2-1 at Killingwor­th Town.
