DEATH smash survivor Meg McBurnie has told for the first time of her torment at the crash which killed her best friend on a birthday night out.

Bethany Fisher died when the Ford Mondeo she was in hit vehicles on Victoria Terrace, Bedlington, Northumberland, on August 19.

Despite the efforts of neighbours and paramedics, the 19-year-old died before she could reach hospital.

Meg, 19, was left with serious injuries in the pile-up.

Paying tribute to her best friend, she said: “Everyone loved her and her funeral was the hardest day of my life. From the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep, I’m always thinking about her. It still doesn’t feel real.

“I’m heartbroken really. It is so strange not having a phone call or a text from her and I just miss her.”

They met at Bedlington’s St Benet Biscop Catholic High School and formed an inseparable bond, and later worked together at the Sandy Bay Holiday Park, in nearby Newbiggin-by-the Sea, where Bethany was popular with colleagues.

Meg, of Guide Post, said: “She worked in the bar and restaurant and everyone loved her straight away. She was amazing with all the customers and the staff.”

Outside of work they enjoyed socialising in Bedlington.

“We were always going out drinking, even on week days,” Meg said. “It was our thing to go for food and then we’d go get pitchers from Wetherspoons.

“We would call ourselves the loners and would go out just the two of us. There was never much persuasion needed.

“We used to go to Breakers Pool Bar And Lounge, even though we don’t play pool, and go and sit in the corner. We liked being with each other.”

Following the crash, Meg suffered five fractures to her pelvis and internal bleeding.

She said: “I need to use a wheelchair for long distances but I’m getting a little bit better. I’m having to relive what happened every day and it is really hard.”

Bethany’s funeral took place at St Cuthbert’s Church and she leaves behind mum Isabel, dad Brian and brother Charlie. • Jordan O’Donnell, of Waverly Court, Bedlington Station, admitted causing Bethany’s death by dangerous driving and causing death by driving while uninsured. He admitted causing Meg serious injury by dangerous driving and acts intending to pervert the course of justice by making a false report about a burglary and theft of his car - and failing to stop after an accident.
