Fishing was swell for boats that managed to beat weather conditions

- By SAM HARRIS

WEATHER conditions once again prevented the majority of boats from getting to sea.

North Shields charter boat JFK Two did manage to get out on Monday and, in spite of a two-metre northerly swell, more than 30 fish were taken with a couple of double-figure ling among them.

The best ling weighed in at 13lb and was taken by Mark Francis. There were also cod to 7lb.

JFK TWO skipper Allan said they had a surprisingly large amount of pollock between 5lb and 6lb, with the best being 8½lb, taken mainly on Sidewinder Shads, with the cod and ling being taken on Daylights and Hokis baited with mackerel strip.

Boats are still picking up mackerel, but kayak anglers are complaining that they can’t get through them to the other species underneath. ■■MY GUESTS on CVFM’s Gone Fishing radio programme this Saturday are Magni Blistein and Hazel Tipping.

Magni is a charter boat skipper in the Faroe Islands. Phil Williams, one of the Gone Fishing team, recently fished with Magni, especially for plaice. Among the ones which were caught, Phil had two with a combined weighed of 17lb 10oz.

Hazel is the owner of Hookers Baits, Blackpool. As far as I know she is the only female bait digger in this country, and supplies worm, crab and so on. You can contact her on 07898 793181.

Tune in live (8am-10am) on www. cvfm.org.uk “Listen Live”, or log on to Mix Cloud from the following Monday. ■■THINGS are looking good for the 46th Newbiggin Open Shore Competition which is being held this Sunday. This is a heaviest bag competition, with a first prize of £500, plus a prize table valued at over £2,000.

Fishing is from 10am to 2pm with registration at the Bank House Club, Newbiggin from 8am to 9.30am. Entry fee is £12 for seniors and this includes the heaviest single fish. Junior fee is £5. The boundaries are from the Seahouses Breakwater to Tynemouth Pier, excluding both. Tickets can be obtained from local tackle shops beforehand. ■■A LOT of fish have been taken in the Newbiggin Open boundary area. The majority have been on the small side but there have been odd fish to 6lb.

Among the areas that have fished well have been Whitehouse Sands, Hauxley, Cresswell, Hadstone, The Private Beach, Newbiggin West End, the Back of the Houses at Cambois. Lynemouth beach has also given a few codling – there could be a decent weigh-in for Sunday’s competition.

A variety of baits have worked, with lug and black lug now fishing as well, if not better, than crab.

Newbiggin Angling Club member Rob Thirlwell, a regular contributor to CVFM’s Gone Fishing show, will be suggesting some of the best marks for fishing the Newbiggin Open.

You can hear Rob towards the end of the show on Saturday morning.
