TODAY WE TALK TO WECAN (WE ENABLE CHILDREN WITH ADDITIONAL NEEDS)

What will you do with this year’s Wish money? WE would like to spend Wish funding on providing special days out and trips for the children and young people. Tell us about your group. WECAN was established in 1991 and is a small local charity supporting children and young people with additional needs and disabilities to access local leisure activities and events.

We also provide critical respite and short breaks for their families.

We support up to forty children and young people and their families in the Tynedale area. What kind of activities take place at your group? SUPPORT for the children and young people to go swimming, bowling, trampolining, play football, go to soft play and the cinema, amongst other activities. Who is the longest serving member of your group? SOME have been attending our activity sessions since they were six years old, leaving when they were 19. Tell us about the biggest or best activity or event your group has organised. THE biggest activity we have organised is probably our charity ball back in 2014 where we raised vital funds through an auction at Dissington Hall.

We also deliver an annual summer scheme during the school summer holidays. What is your group’s proudest moment to date? WE have proud moments every day as we work with the children and young people! Why should someone join your group? OUR staff support our fantastic work and are inspired by the courage and determination of our children and young people.

A disabled child or young person may join to socialise, be active and have fun!

A parent of a disabled child may be able to access respite and short breaks What makes you proud to be from the North East using five words? GENEROSITY and kindness of Geordies.
