Reporter ARTWORK from a swimming-themed exhibition is to be sold to raise cash for the restoration of a derelict open-air pool.

The Swimmers exhibition was installed along the bridge at Tynemouth Station in June and has since been seen by thousands of people. The display closed last Thursday and now the figures that were part of the installation, designed and handmade by local artist Florence Waller, will be sold in aid of the Tynemouth Outdoor Pool redevelopment.

The work, commissioned by the Friends of Tynemouth Outdoor Pool, celebrates the past, present and future of the lido and features swimmers, giant goggles, flippers and armbands.

People will be able to buy the one-off figures and other oversized items through the Friends’ online store.

Penny Henry, who organised the display, said: “The Swimmers exhibition has made a huge impact on both locals and visitors to Tynemouth and has been a popular talking point for everyone who has visited the station over the summer.

“It has raised the profile of the pool project even more, and we’re excited that our supporters now have an exclusive opportunity to own these amazing, oneoff, hand-made items. What’s more, it means we’ll be raising even more money towards the redevelopment costs – which brings us even closer to getting that brand new outdoor pool in Tynemouth.”

A planning application to develop the derelict site, based at the southern end of Longsands beach, has been submitted to North Tyneside Council.

The first phase is to include a new 25m heated outdoor pool for seasonal use, an interactive water feature, better access for all users, temporary changing and toilet facilities, and a number of café/ refreshment and retail opportunities.

Phases two and three will involve establishing adjacent buildings which would ultimately house permanent changing rooms and a café, together with further leisure facilities that could include a gym and a restaurant. It is estimated that phase one will need around £2.7m and the Friends are looking to raise a significant proportion of that money through a community share scheme. The share offer would allow members of the public to invest in the project. Supporters still have a chance to pre-register for shares.
