Shanks for the memory in cup clash

-

THE first round of the Neville Cowey Cup saw a repeat of the 2016 final, as West Jesmond travelled to Ponteland United Reserves.

Unfortunately for Kenny Malia’s side, there was also a repeat result as Ed Shanks netted the only goal to see West Jesmond through to the quarter-finals.

A thrilling game in North Northumberland saw Stobswood Welfare progress with a 4-2 victory over Forest Hall.

Jake Baker, Kevin Bell and Jack Henderson scored for Welfare, who also benefited from an own goal, while Lewis Millen and Jonny Irvine replied for Forest Hall.

There was another exciting tie at Newcastle Chemfica Amateurs, who lost out to Jesmond FC 3-2.

Petrache Lulian headed home to give Jesmond the lead, only for Sean Obuseng to level matters as he bundled in a rebound from a saved spot kick.

James Nowosielski’s cross then sailed into the net to put Fica in front, but Jake Armitage’s excellent free-kick levelled the game again.

The visitors sealed victory when Lulian headed home for the second time late on.

Morpeth Town Seniors and Newbiggin Hall Vettic were also in the goals, with Morpeth progressing by a 6-4 verdict.

Kyle Shaw bagged a brace for Peth, with Jonny Spiers, Ash McAlpine, Lewis Tanney and Simon Farrier also on the scoresheet.

Jonathan Anderson and Nathan Lowden both registered a pair of counters for the Vettics.

Greg Irwin scored twice for Haltwhistle Jubilee as they beat Killingworth YPC Cobras 2-0, while Liam Thompson, Dean Shortt and Jason Riches were the marksmen for Ellington who beat Wideopen and District A 3-0.

The only League fixture to be played saw Gosforth Bohemian Reserves beat Newcastle Medicals in the battle of the league’s two longest-serving clubs.

Pete Hall celebrated a hat-trick for Gosforth and was joined on the scoresheet by Al Castillo, with John Steel scoring both goals for Medicals.
