Rafa and United set for talks
NEWCASTLE United are believed to be ready to talk to Rafa Benitez about extending his current contract at St James’ Park.
Any serious discussions are yet to take place between Benitez and owner Mike Ashley, but with the former Liverpool manager’s contract expiring at the end of next season, uncertainty over his future is likely to grow unless a new deal is agreed.
Benitez was unhappy at certain stages of the last transfer window but got on with the job and the club have made a steady start to the season under his guidance.
A report in the Times yesterday suggested that Ashley is pleased with United’s opening few games, but with the club still effectively up for sale, the owner wants to make sure that the biggest asset – Benitez – remains on board to ensure Newcastle are an attractive proposition to potential buyers.
Benitez currently has a release clause worth £5.5m and has attracted interest from West Ham in recent months.
The Spaniard would want assurances on spending power and the chance to continue to grow the club after making changes to the club’s scouting network and recruitment system over the summer.
Benitez was only handed limited funds in the summer, resulting in budget signings such as Joselu and Javier Manquillo.
Newcastle are yet to comment on the reports so far, but it is understood that sit-down talks between Benitez and the board are yet to take place.
