POLE POSITION

RESERVED IS THE HOT NEW POLISH BRAND WINNING THE BACKING OF KATE MOSS. EMMA JOHNSON TAKES A LOOK AT WHAT IT HAS TO OFFER

- EMMA JOHNSON

AMONG my New Year’s resolutions back in January, along with try to ‘be less anxious’ (fail), to spend less (fail), to swear less (epic fail), I promised myself I would ‘stop getting worked up about anything the Kardashian clan says or does’.

Sounds easy. But when you write about fashion for a living and spend as much time reading gossip sites and magazines as I do – again this is actual work – then it is pretty tricky. Needless to say I have completely failed at this too.

Kim has annoyed me with everything from moaning about her bum being photoshopped to ‘look worse’, to trying to pull off the elegance of Jackie Onassis in her latest magazine cover shoot; Kylie annoys me with all those selfies she posts of her hyperinflated lips or bikini-clad bottom; and I could really do without seeing yet another photo of Kourtney Kardashian on holiday.

Oddly, Khloe I reckon I could stand to go for a drink or two with. She seems a laugh.

And now Kendall, right, who already irks me because she seems to be every designer’s ‘go-to’ model despite having one expression and minimal personality, has got me frothing at the mouth following the news that she is being awarded one of the highest accolades in the fashion industry.

The reality TV star is to be named Fashion Icon of the Decade at Daily Front Row’s 2017 Fashion Media Awards in New York next week.

In fairness, it is not actually Kendall I should be annoyed with. It’s the people at the online magazine that I should be directing my anger towards.

So this is for them: For goodness sake, Kendall is only 21. At the beginning of this decade she was barely 11. I find it hard to believe she was making too many style statements as a school girl.

Even now I don’t particularly see her as a ‘style icon’. She strikes me more as someone in the right place at the right time, who is told to wear the right clothes and make the right faces at the right cameras.

To me, style icons are people like Jackie O, like Audrey Hepburn, like Madonna, like Kate Moss, people who have blazed their own trails, created their own looks and led, not followed, trends.

Who knows, maybe in a decade’s time I will be able to say the same of Kendall. For now I am just keeping my fingers crossed they don’t give next year’s award to Kim’s daughter North... IN other news, while I am all for a woman’s right to shoes, Melania Trump’s choice of footwear to visit hurricaneravaged Texas this week left a lot to be desired. Needle-thin high heels that would be hard to walk into a restaurant in were really not the obvious option for a disaster zone. I had to giggle at US Daily Show presenter Trevor Noah’s take on ‘stiletto-gate’ though. He quipped: “In Melania’s defence, she lives in a permanent disaster zone, and that’s what she always wears. Cut her some slack.”
