Spartans look to hit the ground running after two-week break

- By JEFF BOWRON

AFTER a fortnight without a game Blyth Spartans get the chance to return to winning ways against Nuneaton Town tomorrow.

Blyth have lost their last two, against Shaw Lane in the FA Cup and 5-4 in a crazy game a Kidderminster.

Before that Spartans had scored 13 goals in four straight wins, and manager Alun Armstrong is keen to recapture that form.

Armstrong said: “The break has allowed us to get a rest and freshen up, and also to get a few players back from injury.”

Jordan Laidler, Ian Watson and winger Jarrett Rivers all return from injury but midfield man Damon Mullen is unavailable.

Former Inverness Caledonian Thistle schemer Lewis Horner has had a scan on his knee and could also be out. “Whilst it’s good to get three players back we’re still low on numbers for a game against a Nuneaton side that will be a bit fragile,” said Armstrong.

“We need to get at them from the off and it’s an opportunity to get the three points that will keep us in the top five.”

Nuneaton have won only two of their last 10 games and have dropped to 17th, but they did beat Southport 3-0 last time out.

The Midlands outfit are one of only three Vanarama National League North sides still looking for their first away win of the season.

Blyth this week signed Greg Rutherford following a spell at Berwick Rangers, but it could be a couple of weeks before the striker is eligible to play.

Tomorrow is annual Non-League Day, and Blyth will be hoping for a larger crowd than usual at Croft Park.
