THERE were several high-scoring clashes with mid-table Wallington leading the way.

They moved up two places to fifth with a 7-1 home win over secondbottom FC United of Newcastle.

John Paxton led the way with a hattrick to take his league tally for the season to five.

He was joined on the scoresheet by Josh Laverick’s brace and a goal apiece for Josh Gilmartin and Jordan Nellis, with Anthony Dobbie replying.

Wallington’s three points saw them move level on points with Ponteland, who were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Killingworth Town.

The visitors led through first-half strikes from Michael Fenwick and Chris Tait before Reece HavelockBrown and Ethan Bewley netted at each end of the second to earn a share of the spoils.

Newcastle University took over the leadership, by a point, when they prevailed 2-0 at home to Shankhouse, who dropped to third.

Keith Douglas opened the scoring from the spot on 22 minutes and Joe Hamplin added the second just after the hour.

A solitary strike 10 minutes into the second period from James Newton was enough to earn fourth-placed Birtley all three points at Gateshead Rutherford.

Basement boys Gateshead A lost 3-2 at Ashington Colliers, although Matty Halliday did afford the visiting Heed an interval lead just before the 20-minute mark and Kieran Green doubled it shortly after the restart.

However, the Heed are averaging three goals conceded per game this season and so it proved again in this game.

The hosts hit back late on to take the win with efforts from Anthony Watson just after the hour then, in the final 10 minutes, Aiden Lynn and Connor Andrews hit a quickfire pair to crush the Heed.

Seven goals were scored in the games at Northbank and Percy Main as the Cumbrians enjoyed a 6-1 success over visitors North Shields Athletic.

Mark Worrall struck a 13-minute hat-trick midway through the first half.

Josh Morley notched twice and Michael Hayton added the other after Karl Morrison had given Athletic a first-minute lead.

At Percy Main – in a game with three three red cards – Whitley Bay A took a two-goal advantage inside 10 minutes through Kyle Downey and Connor Campbell before the hosts hit back to take an interval lead through a Paul Wilkinson (2) and Jake Forster.

In the second half Campbell added his second before Regan Patterson sealed three points for the visitors.
