Watson is seeking some cup of cheer

- By JEFF BOWRON

FORMER Newcastle United star Steve Watson is determined to get his reign as Gateshead manager off to a winning start tomorrow.

A place in the first round of the FA Cup is at stake at Evo-Stik Northern Premier League outfit Buxton along with £12,500 in prize money.

Watson played more than 250 games for hometown team Newcastle and his appointment over the water at Gateshead has been well received.

Chairman Richard Bennett said: “The decision to give Steve his first managerial job has gone down very well and we are delighted to bring him home.

“It is a pity we are not at home this weekend, especially with Newcastle not playing, as it would have put a few hundred on the gate.”

Watson’s first game at the International Stadium will be on Wednesday night if his new side draws tomorrow’s fourth qualifying round game at Buxton.

If not the 43-year-old will take charge on home soil for the first time on the last Saturday in October against Dover Athletic.

Watson joined Gateshead this week from Vanarama National League leaders Macclesfield Town, where he had been assistant manager.

His pedigree in cup competitions during his time with the Silkmen was impressive.

The FA Trophy final was reached last season, Macc earlier knocking Walsall out if the FA Cup before losing to Oxford United in a replay.

Watson said: “Not only was it a massive boost financially to the club, doing well in the FA Cup was a huge buzz.

“We went down to Walsall and beat them 1-0. It was a great feeling and then everyone was buzzing about the draw. We ended up getting another good league club in Oxford and they were two great occasions.

“That is what you want as a club, and what I want for Gateshead.

“We have to get through the qualifying tie first but that is what is there for them.

“We have seen it for years when the cameras are in the dressing rooms where there have been cup shocks. They are great scenes.

“Although some people try to evaluate it a bit the FA Cup is still magical for teams at our level and below.

“We will be going all out to do well in it. Buxton are a decent side who try to play football and it is a big game for them.

“We have to be strong and professional – for us it is all about being in the hat on Monday.”
