THE RYTON AND DISTRICT WAR MEMORIALS PROJECT

-

What will you do with this year’s Wish money?

We would love to use any money from Wish this year to pay for the maintenance, upkeep and updating of our website. Tell us about your group.

The project began in 2004 to perpetuate the memory of those men and women from the former Ryton Urban District Council area who lost their lives whilst serving in the armed forces, or were killed by enemy action, during the conflicts of the twentieth century.

We involve a large and diverse number of groups and members of our local communities.

Our website attracts interest worldwide. What kind of activities take place at your group?

Research-based talks, exhibitions, advice and expertise on local people, events and locations. Who is the longest serving member of your group?

Mick Hardy, Malcolm Anderson and Iain Mutch - the three committee members since 2004. Tell us about the biggest or best activity or event your group has organised.

We have been involved in many events throughout the region ranging from long-term displays and exhibitions in local libraries, community centres and churches to one off talks to local groups and organisations. What is your group’s proudest moment to date?

Our proudest moment is ongoing as we are the current custodians and distributors of a vast resource of local information, photographs, archive material and personal data on individuals and groups from all over the local area.

It is always immensely satisfying to reply to requests for photographs and information from people all over the world. Why should someone join your group?

To learn about the local area, people, places and events and the impact of conflict and loss to those generations. What makes you proud to be from the Northeast using five words?

Communities, heritage, sacrifice, culture, landscape.
