Diamonds to double up for league closer

- By BARRY WALLACE

NEWCASTLE Diamonds will look to their season on a high with a home double-header – but the club is facing an uncertain future.

Ludvig Lindgren’s men tackle Workington Comets in a 4pm start before finishing the campaign with a local derby against Redcar Bears.

With much uncertainty surrounding the Diamonds’ participation in the sport next year, it is a great opportunity for fans to enjoy 30 league races before a winter of uncertainty.

And the club have decided to bring the curtain on their 2017 season with two SGB Championship fixtures for the price of one to ensure a bumper crowd.

After a superb display at defeating league champions Sheffield last Sunday, the Diamonds are looking to bag six more points to consolidate seventh place.

Workington Comets took three league points back to Cumbria after their previous visit to Byker in July having defeated Newcastle 47–43, despite Lindgren, Robert Lambert and Steve Worrall all racing well and getting into doublefigures for the Diamonds.

And it was a similar close encounter when Redcar visited last month, with only a last-round win securing a 46-44 victory for the Diamonds.

Workington appear to have a stronger line-up than Redcar tomorrow and two of the Comets have each notched 8 points at Byker in the last couple of weeks.

Aussie Ty Proctor made a guest appearance for Sheffield a week ago, while reserve James Sarjeant’s contribution for Glasgow the previous week was instrumental in knocking the Diamonds out of the Championship Knockout Cup quarter-final.

The Comets are due to be led by British champion Craig Cook, whose place as a Grand Prix racer next year has recently been confirmed, while Redcar’s Danish star Jonas B. Andersen skippers the Bears.

The result of the supporters’ poll to decide the winner of the Diamond of the Year award will be announced during the break between the two matches tomorrow.

The admission prices are: Adults £20 (the usual price for one match is £16); concessions £15 (usually £12 per match), while the child’s fee has been pegged at £3 (the normal cost for a single match).
