Bradley should win – Redknapp
EX-FOOTBALLER CALLS FOR PUBLIC TO VOTE FOR YOUNGSTER TO WIN AWARD
FORMER footballer Jamie Redknapp is leading calls for Bradley Lowery to win an award for 2017’s best sporting moment.
Six-year-old Bradley captured the hearts of football fans around the world due to the brave way he fought against cancer and lived his life to the full.
Bradley, who died in July, suffered from terminal neuroblastoma.
In his final years, the Sunderland fan was a mascot for his beloved Black Cats at home and away games, and ran out on to the Wembley pitch with his friend Jermain Defoe ahead of an England game.
Defoe formed an emotional bond with the County Durham schoolboy and his family, regularly visiting him in hospital and attending his birthday party.
Bradley’s brave fight has been nominated for the Moment of the Year in the 2018 Laureas Awards.
The Laureas Awards honour remarkable individuals and teams in the world of sport, and highlights achievements made in the calendar year.
Former Spurs and Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp is backing Brad to win the award posthumously.
There is one week remaining to vote for Bradley to win.
He said: “When the football world comes together like it did for young Bradley it was an incredible thing because he was such a brave young man, obviously Sunderland fans took him to their heart and certainly the football world did.”
Redknapp, who played alongside Jermain Defoe at Tottenham, also praised his former teammate for the relationship he built with Bradley and the support he offered to his parents: “I think Jermain Defoe deserves a special mention because he went above and beyond being a footballer, being a good person, he went to see him in hospital all the time and I think pretty much fell in love with the young man, it was very nice to see.
“Football sometimes doesn’t get recognised for that, it was truly special.”
A foundation set up in Bradley’s name is raising awareness about cancer and offers support to young people fighting the illness.
“Obviously [it was] heartbreaking when he passed away but his mum and dad have done so much work in helping raise awareness and hoping that with the money they’ve raised, this illness will stop in the future.
“It’s an amazing achievement, and they should be extremely proud of themselves, the football world was touched by what they did,” said Redknapp.
