-

TOP student athletes from around the world have joined Team Newcastle to help cement it as one of the best performance sport universities in the UK.

Following its Top 10 BUCS ranking in 2016/17 (its seventh in 11 years), Newcastle welcomed 148 sports scholars who will compete across 18 different sports.

This is a record number of sports scholars for the university, representing a 20% increase on last year’s intake.

Colin Blackburn, Director of Sport at Newcastle University, said: “The highest-ever number of Sports Scholarships and applications reflects not only the standard of applications we received but also the increased support of the university, Santander, Sir Robert McAlpine and Reeves Independent Wealth Management. Our sports scholarship programme enables high-performing student athletes to fulfil both their sporting and academic potential.

“It is about excellence and is aimed at ensuring our student athletes maximise both their sporting and academic potential at Newcastle.”

Sports Scholarships are awarded on an annual basis and are available to undergraduate and postgraduate applicants, as well as current students.

Team Newcastle has 94 new and 54 continuing sports scholars.

All scholars have access to the Scholar Workshop Programme covering topics including sports psychology and performance analysis.
