Goal hero Carl in replay vow to Shields fans

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

SOUTH Shields star Carl Finnigan believes Farsley Celtic will be in for “a totally different game” when they head to Mariners Park tomorrow night.

The two sides met at Celtic’s Throstle Nest home in the FA Trophy First Qualifying Round on Saturday, with Finnigan’s injurytime penalty securing a replay on South Tyneside.

The Mariners had fallen behind to a goal from Celtic top-scorer James Walshaw.

But a foul on Jamie Holmes gave former Newcastle United academy forward Finnigan a chance to level the scores.

He made no mistake from the spot and is already looking forward to the replay.

Speaking to the Mariners website he said “I think it’s a fair result in the end.

“It was a game like I have never played in before, with that wind.

“As always you know the kind of character we have in the squad. We have always got faith that we would get the result and we nicked it at the death.

“It’ll be a totally different game at Mariners Park on Tuesday night”

Finnigan’s side were backed by a large contingent of travelling support in West Yorkshire.

And the striker is eager to reward them by putting in an improved display in the replay.

“The fans will come again on Tuesday and hopefully we can put in a better performance.

“It’ll be in better conditions, on a fantastic pitch and we are extremely lucky to have that.

“It allows us to play the kind of football that we want to and I think everybody at the club appreciates that, we certainly do as players”

Morpeth Town stayed at the top of Northern League Division One after a hard-fought 2-1 win at Team Northumbria.

Ben Dibb-Fuller got the hosts back on level terms after Sean Taylor had given the leagueleaders the lead 15 minutes from time.

However, Mark Davison snatched a late win for the visitors just a minute after Dibb-Fuller’s equaliser.

Marske United remain in second place after Craig Gott’s brace helped them to a 2-0 home win against Ryhope CW.

Late goals from Nathan Fisher and Ross Colquhoun meant that West Auckland Town battled back from two goals behind to secure a 2-2 draw at North Shields.
