Armstrong’s joy at ending goal drought

-

NEWCASTLE United loanee Adam Armstrong admits he is pleased to have finally got off the mark for Bolton Wanderers in the Championship.

The 20-year-old netted during the Trotters’ 2-1 victory over Norwich City on Saturday, his first in 14 Championship matches this term.

His manager Phil Parkinson praised Armstrong for his “courage” during his goal drought, and the forward appears relieved to have finally found the target.

“It feels good – I think the three points feels better though,” Armstrong said of his goal during an interview with Bolton’s official website.

“We’ve just got to push on now and look forward to Preston in a couple of weeks’ time.

“I’m pleased with the finish. It was how Gary [Madine] touched it down, it made me have no other option so I just struck it and luckily it went in.”

Strangely, Armstrong has been operating as a left-winger for Bolton in recent games, despite being a proven goalscorer at youth level – and even in League One.

But the England World Cup winner insists he feels comfortable in the position.

“Yeah, I feel all right and I’m pleased to be in the team,” Armstrong said of playing on the wing.

“It’s going well, I think that’s five unbeaten now, so the lads are doing well and helping us out a lot with it.

“I’ve been working hard so it’s pleasing to get the goal – that puts an extra topping on it.”

Although Armstrong has only scored three goals in 17 appearances in all competitions so far this season, Parkinson insists the young forward’s confidence has never dropped.

“I could feel the rumblings – why are we still picking Armstrong? But I think he’s put in some terrific performances,” Parkinson told the Bolton News.
