Centre with a sense of community

TODAY WE TALK TO KIBBLESWORTH VILLAGE MILLENNIUM CENTRE

-

Tell us about your group.

Kibblesworth Village Millennium Centre was established in 2001 and became a registered charity in June 2014.

The centre has 10 committee members, around 100 volunteers and 800 members – although it is open to everyone and not only restricted to members.

What will you do with this year’s Wish money?

If the centre were successful we would ensure that the money helped towards keeping the centre as a venue and able to run groups, classes and events. It also provides a meeting point for people. It means so much, not only to the volunteers and staff who help run the centre but to all the users of the centre who rely on it – particularly Kibblesworth’s elderly residents.

What else dies your group do?

Fundraisers; our biggest have been not for the centre but for other charities such as LIVErNORTH, Steps charity and fundraising for Haiti.

Our biggest since becoming a registered charity was a summer fair for Sepsis UK, at which the centre helped raise more than £3,000.

Who is the longest-serving member of your group?

The longest-serving members are Richard Irwin (chair), Norma Bolton (vice-chair), Kay Robson (secretary) and Jackie O’Boyle (treasurer).

They have all been involved since the setting up and opening of the centre.

Tell us about the biggest or best activity or event your group has organised.

The centre has a range of activities including coffee mornings, luncheon clubs, photography groups and playgroups, to name but a few.

What is your group’s proudest moment to date?

The centre’s proudest moment to date was when we raised the money for its refurbishment and the centre was subsequently opened by HRH Princess Anne.

Why should someone join your group?

There is so much going on at the centre, and a real sense of community.

What makes you proud to be from the North East using five words?

Friendly, helpful, kind, generous people.
