Chaos as car crashes into house

- By SOPHIE DOUGHTY sophie.doughty@ncjmedia.co.uk @Sophie_Doughty

Crime Reporter A DRIVER has had a lucky escape when his car left the road and smashed into a house.

The new-build home in Ashington was empty at the time of the crash on Tuesday night, but the motorist suffered minor injuries.

Police are investigating, adding the driver did not need hospital treatment.

One neighbour said she has feared such an incident would happen, since moving to the street six months ago.

The mum, who asked not to be named, says cars regularly travel down the road at high speeds.

She said: “It is just your worst nightmare.

“There’s a 30mph sign just past these houses. But we have got cars doing 50mph just next to our home. I have always thought, ‘What if they came into the house?’ It has been causing us a lot of worry.”

The neighbour heard the crash at around 8pm.

She said: “It was terrible. We just heard a big crash. Then when we looked out the window we saw two fire engines and the police. It was just a young person that was driving.

“It wiped out the front garden wall and went into the house.

“The car’s still there. They can’t move it because they have wiped out the gas and electric meters. I don’t know who lives there, but they have been evacuated, the poor things.

“It could have been a lot worse for the driver and the people in the house.”

Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with any information should call Northumbria Police on 101 quoting log 1056 14/11/17.
