Shields hit opponents for six

MATCHES in Group Three of the Durham Cricket Board’s Under-14 Six-a-Side Competitio­n were played this week - South Shields, Hartlepool A and Sunderland the competing teams.

In the first game, Sunderland faced South Shields.

The Wearsiders batted first and scored 72-4 off their 10 overs, Kyle Hutchinson standing out with 42 not out.

For Shields, Ewan Jenkins took 2-12 off his three overs.

The South Tynesiders chased the total down without losing a wicket in 6.5 overs, Luke Duffy 23 not out and Matthew Sheppard unbeaten on 25.

Hartlepool A then played Sunderland.

The Cleveland side batted first and posted an impressive 104-0 off their 10 overs, Jack Wilson and Max Jackson both retiring undefeated on 27.

Sunderland chased the score down in nine overs, totalling 107 for the loss of four wickets - Kyle Hutchinson again top-scoring with 29 not out.

In game three, South Shields took on Hartlepool A.

Hartlepool batted first and, due to a fantastic fielding display from Shields - which included four run-outs - were restricted to 46 all out.

Shields reached their target for the loss of one wicket and qualified for the finals at the Emirates Riverside Indoor Cricket Centre on December 6. ■■THE last games were played in Group One of the adult six-a-side competitio­n.

Lanchester batted first against Chester-le-Street and posted 122-3 in 10 overs.

Graham Brinton retired on 33 not out and skipper Stuart McPhail hit 28 not out.

In reply Chester-le-Street finished on 107 off 10 overs, skipper John Coxon striking 24, Conor Pattison 24 and Oli Barrett 28.

Whickham then played Chester-le- Street, the latter batting first and amassing 143-5 off 10 overs - Coxon again in the runs with 32 not out.

In reply, Whickham made a flying start - being 60-0 off just four overs - but fell 15 runs short in losing their last wicket off the last ball in the game. Coxon claimed 2-25 for the Cestrians.
