MORPETH athletes were out in force at Heaton Harriers’ Memorial Road Races on Newcastle Town Moor.

While Peter Newton was a runaway winner of the main event ,Morpeth’s youngsters also produced some outstanding performances especially in the under-20/17 5k race.

Despite the strong winds blowing across the Moor, Taylor Glover stormed home - heading five teammates who followed him across the finish line.

Glover won by 31 seconds in 16min 14secs with Joe Ramshaw runner-up (16:45) and Daniel Melling (16:53) completing the onetwo-three.

In the women’s race over the same five-kilometre distance victory went to Elswick’s Robyn Bennett in 18:45, Morpeth’s Gracie Hufton (20:00) following her home.

Sunderland’s Eve Quinn was a further five seconds adrift in third place.

A few minutes after Bennett won the under-20 women’s contest it was the turn of her younger brother Rowan to face the starter for the under-15 three-kilometre race.

It proved to be another Bennett success, Rowan leading the field home by five seconds with a winning time of 10:15.

Gateshead’s David Race finished in second with Tom Cunningham (Morpeth) crossing the line in third a further four seconds adrift.

The girls’ race was won by Gateshead’s Ines Curran 10 seconds clear of Morpeth’s Holly Peck, Houghton’s Lydia James receiving the thirdplace award.

The under-13 races were also over a distance of three kilometres and it was another Gateshead success with Oliver Douglas first home seven seconds clear of Tom Slane (Ryton Tri) with Theo Barron, also of Gateshead, finishing third.

The girls’ race was won by Hannah Bowyer of Blackhill Bounders, who crossed the line 10 seconds ahead of Elswick duo Abigail Leiper and Caitlan Flanagan.

The under-11 races were over a distance of 1,000 metres and it was a successful outing for Houghton’s Joseph McGinley, who came home just two seconds clear of Alex Lienard with Low Fell’s Noah Scott celebrating third place.

The girls’ race was also a tight affair, Chester-le-Street’s Ella Jones just getting home two seconds ahead of Elswick’s Lucy Milburn with the promoting club’s Charlotte Hobbs a further one second behind in third place.
