Swimmers are rescued from the North Sea

-

THREE people were pulled from the North Sea in two separate emergency rescues within hours.

Two swimmers from a group and a woman on her own were saved on Sunday morning by the emergency services after getting into difficulty.

The first call came to the RNLI Cullercoats lifeboat crew shortly before 9am on Sunday when they were alerted by a member of the public to a woman in the sea.

Crews were preparing for a training day when a dog walker told them there was a woman in difficulty off Cullercoats Bay.

As the lifeboat was about to launch, the dog walker found the woman and pulled her from the water with the help of a crew member. The crew carried her to the lifeboat station, where they gave her first aid. She was then taken to hospital.

Just after 11.30am, Blyth and Tynemouth RNLI were sent to help a group of swimmers at Whitley Bay after a 999 call. The lifeboats were already at sea at the time of the call and along with the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade, started to search the water.

After around five minutes, a man was found and pulled onto Tynemouth’s lifeboat before being taken back to their station.

A short time later a woman was brought ashore by another swimmer. Both casualties were conscious but appeared to be suffering from severe hypothermia.

They were taken to hospital for further treatment.
