Seaton are Del-ighted to be at top

AS several top-flight sides were dumped out of the cups, Seaton Delaval went top of the table with an emphatic 5-0 win at Newbiggin.

Michael Trodd’s second-half brace added to goals from Shane Donaghy in the first half and Michael Baxter and Matty Hayton, at the death, in the second - a Newbiggin dismissal on half-time proving costly.

Newcastle University, Gateshead Rutherford, Wallington, FC United of Newcastle and Whitley Bay A kept the home fires burning in the cup competitio­ns.

The Students defeated Division One highfliers Newcastle Chemfica 3-2.

Rutherford edged past hosts Wallsend Boys Club on penalties in the League Cup while FC United triumphed 6-0 at Cramlingto­n Town and Whitley A prevailed 5-1 at Spittal Rovers in the Bill Gardner Cup.

Chemfica went into a two-goal lead through Callum Webb and Alex McKitteric­k with less than 30 minutes to to go.

Matthew Konadou-Yiadom pulled one back minutes after Chemfica’s second before Zack Thomas levelled at the death for extra time.

In the added thirty the Uni won courtesy of Callum Horne.

Gateshead Rutherford fell behind to a 30- yard effort from Wallsend’s Dos Santos early in the first before levelling through Dylan Howorth midway through the second.

That took take the game to the added 30 and penalties before Rutherford went through 4-3 on sudden death.

Wallington also progressed after a shootout following their 4-4 draw at Hexham - the game 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes.

Hexham netted via Liam Crowe (2), Lewis and Loughhead while the visitors replied with goals from Tom Trsucott, Jordan Nellis, Aiden Armstrong and Michael Angus.

Birtley won the only all-Premier Division game 4-1 in extra-time against Northbank, Kieran Blair equalising for the visitors with seven minutes remaining after James Norton had afforded the hosts a first-half advantage.

Tony Smith restored the lead in extra-time before a late brace from Andy Hill sealed Birtley’s progressio­n.

FC United ran riot at Cramlingto­n Town as Owen Whitmore helped himself to a hattrick. Further goals were added by Tommy Bainbridge, Connor Rainey and Kieran Moffatt.

Ashington Colliers (home to Prudhoe YC), Percy Main (away to Forest Hall) and North Shields (away to Winlaton) were all dismissed from the Bill Gardner Cup.
