Hillsong grateful to a spot-on Frizzell for ending Hopes of Church

HILLSONG Newcastle enjoyed a resounding 5-1 to stay top of Division One 10 days ago - but at the weekend found the going much tougher against Hope Church Sunderland.

They needed a penalty in the 75th minute - convered by Gary Frizzell - to secure a 1-0 victory.

Saint Charles RC Church Gosforth returned to winning ways after a heavy defeat but made hard work of beating Heaton Saints.

A back-post header from Phil Russell after six minutes gave Heaton a 1-0 lead.

Steven Langstaff equalised five minutes later and added his second just before half- time to put Saint Charles ahead 2-1 at the break.

Tom Spencer scored after the hour to increase Saints’ advantage to 3-1.

With four minutes left, Matthew Haigh netted to make the score 3-2 and move Saints back into second place, three points behind Hillsong.

Stockton Salvation Army having a week off give City of God Walker the opportunit­y to move into third place by defeating Saint John’s Snod’s Edge.

However, they did not take into account the form of Michael Clarke, who scored all Saint John’s goals. He opened the scoring in the eighth minute and then made it 2-0 three minutes later.

Clarke completed his hat-trick on 5e4 minutes.

City of God Walker netted through Okon Edidiong - but Clarke nabbed his fourth to clinch a 4-1 victory.

Morpeth Mighty Oaks triumphed 5-1 at Colburn.

Jake Newstead and Matthew Tanney took Oaks to a 2-0 half-time lead.

Corinthian­s started the quickest in the second half to score first but Josh Bell made it 3-1, Newstead grabbed his second for 4-1 and Lewis Rutherford rounded off the scoring for the Northumber­land team.

■UNBEATEN North Shields lost 2-0 to third-placed Saint Paul’s Ryhope in the Premier Division.

The match was tied 0-0 at half-time but the deadlock was broken just before the hour as Kieran Davis notched or Saint Paul’s.

Davis claimed his second on 85 minutes to give the Wearsiders a 2-0 win as the Christians lost for the first time in this campaign and dropped to third as a result.
