Second-half own goal sends Colliers on their way to four in a row

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

ASHINGTON extended their unbeaten run in Northern League Division One to four games with a 2-0 home win over Billingham Synthonia.

The two sides went into half-time without breaking the deadlock, but within a minute of the restart Tom Gavin’s own goal put Ashington ahead.

Bottom-of-the-table Synners made the Colliers work for their win and they had to wait until injury time to secure all three points. Dale Pearson was the man to get the goal, as he capitalised on fine work from Gateshead loanee Tom White.

Synners’ night went from bad to worse with the news that secondbottom Washington had secured a 3-1 home win against Team Northumbria.

Lamin Cham gave Washington a second-minute lead but they were pegged back in the first minute of the second half.

However, a Vincent Gash brace helped the Mechanics to a second win in four days.

Corey Nicholson scored an injurytime winner for Ryhope CW in their 2-1 home win against Newcastle Benfield. Nathan Skidmore gave Ryhope a first-half lead with a stunning strike from 35 yards out.

Paul Brayson pulled Benfield level on 70 minutes, but it was Ryhope that took the points thanks to Nicholson’s late goal.

First-half goals from Liam Brooks and Tom Potter helped Whitley Bay into the Third Round of the League Cup with a 2-1 win over Sunderland RCA.

Stephen Callen gave the Wearside outfit a lifeline with a goal just before the hour-mark, but the Seahorses held on for the win.

Andrew Clarkson hit a brace as Chester-le-Street Town came out on top in their Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup Second Round tie against Easington Colliery. Dan McGuire got the Cestrians other goal in a 3-1 win, with Robert Thompson getting a late consolation.
