Quinn picks his greatest United side

-

NEWCASTLE United launched their search for their greatest ever XI earlier this month, and Mick Quinn has joined more than 6,000 fans in picking his side ahead of next month’s 125th birthday celebrations.

United are planning a big celebration to tie in with the game against Leicester, which marks the club’s 125th year in existence. It is a major campaign that will see the club pay tribute to some of the great players to have worn blackand-white down the years.

Quinn was one of the favourites: a cult hero who scored 59 goals in 110 games. And he has – unsurprisingly – picked an attacking line-up for his greatest ever side.

The Chronicle columnist said: “I had to pick a team that would press on because that’s Newcastle United. I would have always gone with a 4-3-3 because I wanted to get as many of the strikers on the ball as I could.

“There are some difficult decisions in there but my midfield is fantastic. I’ve picked Chris Waddle – who wasn’t on one of the shortlists but is a great player. But then you’ve got Gazza and Peter Beardsley cutting in on either side.

“In defence I played with John Beresford so he had to be part of it and Bobby Moncur is a great player.

“A few of them – Shay Given, Alan Shearer, Jackie Milburn – were just obvious picks because they were great players. But it really brings home how many good players have played for Newcastle through the years.”
