A DRUNK pest dialled 999 and made chilling threats to “do a Raoul Moat” and shoot police officers.

Convicted rapist Gurdip Singh telephoned the emergency services late at night from his home in Brunswick Village, in Newcastle, and spoke to call handlers.

The 44-year-old immediately told them he was going to kill officers and their families by copying the notorious murderer, a court was told.

Police initially took the call seriously until officers traced Singh’s number back to his house in Cheviot View and arrested him.

Now Singh, who was jailed after being convicted of raping a woman in 2003, has avoided another immediate stint behind bars after he pleaded guilty to sending a communication conveying false information.

Clare Irving, prosecuting at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, said Singh was already on a suspended sentence for two counts of making malicious calls to the police when he committed his latest offence on November 16.

“The defendant initially rang the crisis team in Northumberland,” the prosecutor said.

“The defendant said he had had enough of life and he had details of police officers’ family members and, if he needed to kill himself, he would make sure he would take someone with him.

“He implied he would kill police family members or police officers.”

After ending that conversation, Singh then dialled 999 and made threats to hurt people, magistrates were told.

Ms Irving added: “The defendant said he would put a gun to someone’s head and ‘do a Raoul Moat.’ The police took the threat seriously and he was later cautioned and arrested.”

In interview, Singh claimed he couldn’t remember making the call because he was drunk but, once a recording of the conversation was played back to him, he admitted it was him.

Janice Hall, mitigating, said Singh, who now has five convictions in total for making malicious communications, had issues with the police and the justice system stemming from past arrests and court appearances.

The solicitor added: “Mr Singh is classified as a vulnerable adult. The first call in this offence was to the crisis team. He was making indications he was suicidal.

“That being said, he has no recollection of making the calls.”

Magistrates gave Singh a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and also extended his current suspended sentence by three months.
