THE construction of a Tyneside bridge is reaching a major milestone.

The old Norham Road Bridge, crossing over the A1058 Coast Road in North Shields, was demolished earlier this year.

Work is now under way to build a new four-lane structure in its place and preparations are being made for the next significant phase of the project.

Between December 1 and 4, precast concrete beams will be delivered to the site and lifted into place. These beams will form an integral part of the new bridge structure.

In order to carry out this operation quickly and safely, the A1058 Coast Road running beneath the bridge will be closed to all traffic from 8pm on Friday, December 1, until the early hours of Monday morning, December 4.

While the Coast Road is closed, drivers will be diverted up and over the existing slip-roads – and pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained across the bridge throughout.

North Tyneside Council has reiterated that while construction work continues, all businesses on Norham Road – both north and south of the Coast Road – will remain open as usual.

These include all shop outlets at North Shields Retail Park, the Tesco Extra store, Tyre Spot, and all businesses on the industrial estates along the entire length of Norham Road.

After work started on the project in June, the bridge was closed to vehicles, and diversions were put in place for drivers.

However pedestrians and cyclists are still able to use the crossing as access for them has been maintained.

The work is scheduled to finish by spring 2018.
