Help us give neglected dogs a home

TODAY WE TALK TO SHAK (SAFE HOMES & KINDNESS)

-

What will you do with this year’s Wish money?

With the number of dogs in our care, vets’ bills are ongoing.

Many of the dogs coming to us have medical needs too. Any Wish funds would be used to help with this. Tell us about your group.

We are a sanctuary for abused, mistreated and neglected dogs.

We work very closely with animal welfare at Northumberland County Council – with stray dogs and neglect cases.

We were founded in June 2006 and have approximately 70 dogs in our care.

Recently we were given enough funding to pay six members of staff and we have around 15 volunteers. What kind of activities take place at your group?

Working only with cases from vets, strays and dogs from our trusted charity partners, SHAK does not take in dogs from members of the public.

Likewise we are not a rehoming centre, although we do offer the opportunity for people to apply for our Forever Foster project.

We concentrate all of our time, energy and resources directly into the well-being of our dogs, enriching lives that others had written off. Who is the longest serving member of your group? Stephen Wylie who is the founder. Tell us about the biggest or best activity or event your group has organised.

Our biggest fundraising activity was when we were chosen to be Sainsbury in Alnwick’s Charity of the Year in 2016.

We raised more than £6,500 in bag packing alone. What is your group’s proudest moment to date?

Being chosen by the folk of Alnwick to be their Jam Jar Army Champions in 2013 and raising over more than £16,500. Why should someone join your group? If they have compassion and a love for dogs and want to give something back. What makes you proud to be from the North East using five words? Definitely all the friendly people.
