Fight night should be a knockout

-

THE North East is set to box clever - by hosting the National Class D Under-21 Amateur Boxing Championships for the first time.

The event, organised by regional charity the Durham Association of Girls and Boys Clubs, will be staged at the Lancastrian Suite in Gateshead on Monday, December 11 (7.00).

Ivan Wood, interim chairman at DABGC, said: “We are thrilled to be staging the championship alongside NE Youth.

“It is a real coup for us to host such a prestigious event and I am sure it will be one to remember.

“The competition is an esteemed event in the national boxing calendar and will showcase the very best talent from the North East and beyond.

“The young people taking part are likely to be the next Olympians and Commonwealth Games competitors - having the next potential Anthony Joshua’s of this world compete here in the region is extremely exciting.

“We have amazing young boxers in the region and I cannot wait to see them in action.”

One of the local stars hoping to compete is Travis Waters of Sunderland ABC.

Waters, 21, took part in the tournament last year, winning the Class D National Championship and receiving the title of best boxer on the night.

Tickets start at just £15 and are available by ringing 0191 272 7494 or by e-mailing Tina at dabgc@btconnect. com. ■■WATCH out for a picture special on the Championships in Grassroots Sport next month.
