The Saints go marching into semis
NTH/EAST CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP LEAGUE
ONLY two matches survived the weekend’s cold snap.
In Consett, Saint Patrick’s faced Jesmond Parish Church in the quarter-finals of the Andy Walker Cup.
The home team was fast out of the blocks as Colin Wheatley netted after seven minutes.
Jesmond could only come out and attack after that but after an hour it looked like Consett had weathered the Newcastle side’s pressure.
They were awarded a penalty which Peter Price converted for a 2-0 lead.
To Jesmond Parish Church’s credited they kept going and were rewarded with a finish from Jonny Pickersgill.
There was new hope for Jesmond – but again Consett were able to hold off them off.
Jack Malone scored in the 89th minute to put the game to bed as Saint Patrick’s triumphed 3-1.
They now visit Stockton Churches Portrack in the semifinals.
In the last four of the Memorial Cup Sunderland Samba welcomed Axiom FC.
The Wearsiders were looking to make a final for the second season in row, whereas new team Axiom were hoping for their first decider.
It was Axiom who struck first through Andrew Simpson after 20 minutes.
Both teams were playing open football with no thought for defensive play and both created good scoring chances.
In the 80th minute Samba’s efforts eventually paid off as Nathan Dodd equalised.
However, the excitement of scoring and getting back in the match saw Samba switch off – and two minutes later Jamie Dunn netted what turned out to be the winning goal for Axoim as they reached their first final. ■■ALL games in the Tyneside Amateur League were called off due to the weather.
