So many selfish motorists around

-

WHY are there more and more selfish drivers on the road these days?

Rule 218 of the Highway Code says: “Do not park partially or wholly on the pavement unless signs permit it”.

Yet everywhere I go there are cars and vans are parked on footpaths, most of the time blocking the footpath, meaning that you have to step on the road to get past.

It seems that car and van drivers these days have no respect for anyone using footpaths. I see cars on my estate parked across the footpath and their driveway is empty. They are just totally lazy. They are not only blocking the paths but are breaking them up. This costs the councils a lot of money to repair. It’s now time that councils started charging everyone parking outside the property on paths and roadways say a weekly charge of £20. You would soon see a shift in parking patterns by these very selfish drivers.

Vehicles parked on pavements can create a hazard to pedestrians by causing an obstruction that may result in them having to step off the pavement into the carriageway.

They restrict the width of the pavement, making it difficult for someone with a pushchair or wheelchair to pass safely – again this person may have to enter the carriageway to avoid the obstruction.

Broken flags from illegally parked vehicles cost the council thousands of pounds a year.

It can also create serious problems for blind, disabled and older people. So why do the police or councils not fine these inconsiderate people? DAVID SMALL
