Sangria bar talking about a revolution

- BY GORDON BARR

TAPAS Revolution is set to open a new lounge and sangria bar in Newcastle tonight.

The bar on Blackett Street, inspired by the lively, dynamic bars in Spain looks set to become Newcastle’s latest drinking destination.

The new bar takes inspiration from Chef Omar Allibhoy’s hometown Madrid, a city that has more bars per capita than any other city in Europe.

Omar has worked with local interior designers Collective Design to create the separate bar; vivid blue tiles, potted greenery and Iberian music bring a taste of Madrid’s lively bar scene to Newcastle.

The lounge and sangria bar is situated next to the restaurant, and can be accessed via a separate entrance on Blackett Street.

“I’m excited to be opening our first lounge and sangria bar in Newcastle, there’s a great bar scene here and I’m excited to get involved and bring some Spanish twists to the mix,” said Omar.

Guests can enjoy an extensive Sangria Menu to share; Omar has created a unique selection using innovative fruit and flavour combinations. Highlights include the Skinny Tradicional (£16) with 30% less sugar, which is a mix of red wine, pineapple, orange and strawberry.

Also on the menu is Sparkling Tropical Sangria (£18) – a blend of refreshing sangria with crisp Cava, passion fruit, watermelon, pineapple and White Berry Sangria (£16) made with white wine, blueberry, raspberry, strawberry and blackberries.

Omar has also created a new Gin and Tonic menu. ‘Gin Tonics’ as they are called in Spain are an extremely popular night-time bar drink to the extent that Spain has now become Europe’s largest gin consumer.

The Gin Tonic menu features a selection of Omar’s favourite Spanish distilleries that use fresh regional botanicals to produce a fine aromatic spirit.

Served in the traditional balloon glass, highlights include Xoriguer (£8) – a blend of mahon gin served with Fever-Tree Indian tonic, homemade lemonade and a lemon and lime garnish and Puerto de Indias Strawberry (£8) – a mix of delicate gin made with Andalusian strawberries and served with Fever-Tree elderflower tonic, strawberry and mint.

An array of Spanish beers from family owned premium lager Estrella Galicia will also be on the menu, alongside a carefully curated selection of craft beer sourced from all corners of the Peninsula.

For wine enthusiasts there will be a large cellar wall with a wide selection of wines from across Spain.

The design takes inspiration from Madrid’s cool, urban bars and is separated from the restaurant by a large glass facade. Guests can enjoy a drink on the comfortable kaoba curved banquettes, or mingle at the high barrels.
