A tribute to a wonderful doctor

-

WHEN I was looking for some old photographs I came across an old appointment letter which was sent by Mr Way, who was a gynaecologist specialist in the RVI, to my mother who had a big cancer operation.

She did well, in those days, to get over this operation and Mr Way looked after her for many years. She lived until 1986. I believe Mr Way died before her - he did not have a long retirement, which was sad.

I was told in his day he made great inroads in the treatment of women. I would think his family were very proud of him, so am I.

This is what Mr Way wrote to my mother regarding her appointment: “Dear Mrs McGuigan, we are anxious to know how you are keeping since you left hospital and would like to see you in the above clinic on: Thursday, 1st November at 2 pm.

“I hope you are going on nicely.” MARGARET GIVENS Alnwick THERE is a memorial stone and sundial for Eddie Cochran at St Martin’s Hospital, in Bath, and you can make a donation in memory of this star to the Sirona Foundation Trust - see www.sirona-cic.org.uk - to St Martin’s Hospital, Clara Cross Lane, Bath, BA2 5RP.

The American rock’n’roll star played his last concert at the Bristol Hippodrome on Easter, Saturday April 16, 1960, just hours before his fatal car crash near Chippenham, where there is also a memorial placed at the crash site.

Eddie was just 21 and he appeared in three Hollywood films and had many hit records which can be found on his AT present I am researching into the history of West Cramlington or West Colliery, this village was demolished in 1938, all that remains is Alexandra Park.

At one time student nurses applied to a hospital and learned the job hands-on! For a SEN it was 18 months and for a SRN it was three years. Now, if any information about this village I would be very pleased to hear from them. D GREEN, 39 Anton Place, Cramlington, Tel: 01670 731443 people already have the qualifications then they have to apply to uni to get on a very hard three-year course.

If not, they have to go to college for one year to gain the required qualifications before they can apply to uni.

Up until last year, student nurses were given a bursary to help them out financially, but guess what, Cameron stopped the bursary for student nurses.

Guess what again, “student teachers” are being offered a bursary of £26,000 a year!

So how on earth does Jeremy Hunt think they are going to fill the wards with much-needed nurses?

Because of Brexit, nurses from the EU are leaving in droves. We are going back to the days of family having to stay on the wards and looking after their families as they did in Victorian times.

Young doctors just qualifying are applying for jobs all over the world except Britain. Who can blame them, 90 or more hours a week for little reward.

It’s great that Hammond (the man who slashed our armed forces by 80,000) is giving nurses a pay rise but it’s not enough.
