Hoop hoop hooray for winning quartet
JUNIOR BASKETBALL
THE first Hoops4Health tournament of the 2017/18 season took place at Temple Park Leisure Centre in South Shields.
Eleven primary schools from across South Tyneside attended, with 36 year five teams taking part.
The aim of the day was to finish with four top teams who would progress to the semi-finals prior to the Newcastle Eagles’ game at Newcastle’s Sports Central on January 12 the final being played at half-time.
After a day of matches which included 102 games being played, East Boldon, Stanhope, St Bede’s and St Oswald’s were victors and will now battle it out to lift the crown of South Tyneside Hoops4Health champions.
All four schools were finalists last year and it will be St Bede’s who will look to retain the title.
The event was supported by Northumbrian Water with the Powered by Water campaign delivering important water messages on hydration to young people and their families.
Hoops4Health is the Eagles Community Foundation’s flagship programme with 95 schools taking part this season.
Each of the schools receives a healthy living roadshow delivered by the Newcastle Eagles.
The roadshow covers the importance of water, fitness, wellbeing and playing basketball.
The next stage of the process sees the Foundation’s community coaches and development officers delivering basketball coaching to prepare the children for their local authority tournament.
Each of the councils within Tyne and Wear and Northumberland will all go through the same process.
All the winners will come together in May to battle it out and be crowned champion of champions.
