You can get them off to a flying start

TODAY WE TALK TO 2510 AIR CADETS

-

What will you do with this year’s Wish money?

This year money raised through Wish would be spent on the flight simulator project.

The Air Cadet movement has lowered the age of joining to 12 years and thus the award syllabuses have changed.

Now we have staged awards and in order to achieve the basic aviation award each cadet must complete a number of hours on a flight simulator. Tell us about your group.

Our group consists of around 18 boys and girls (aged between 12 and 19).

We have been established since 1941 and our logo of a barrage balloon is in recognition to the air defences that protected Newcastle Airport, then an airfield during World War Two. 2510 Air Cadets come from all walks of life. We never turn a child away as every child matters, no matter where they live, their gender, background and, most importantly, regardless of their ability. What kind of activities take place at your group?

Flying, shooting, first aid and model building are just a few examples. Who is the longest serving member of your group?

The young people join at 12 and leave at 19 but some decide to stay and give back to others and therefore volunteer at other squadrons. Tell us about the biggest or best activity or event your group has organised.

We organised Air Cadet Sunday at our local church and it was so fun and we were joined by parents, family and members of the church.

We had cake, coffee and tea afterwards. What is your group’s proudest moment to date?

We have various cadets attend camps and training days or weekends and when they return they are buzzing because they have achieved something due to 2510. Why should someone join your group? It’s fun and you make new friends. We want to expand a child’s horizon. When the cadets gain these qualifications they develop leadership skills through an environment of social interactions, teamwork and good citizenship. What makes you proud to be from the North East using five words?

Geordies edge to the sky.
