Humphreys’ success is Taylor made
GATESHEAD’S Ray Humphreys (off 35) came through a 17-strong field in Whitley Bay Snooker Centre’s latest one-day handicapped pro-am to claim a convincing 3-0 win over Tim Taylor.
Humphrey triumphed 72-51, 60-49, 61-52.
In his semi-final against Wallsend’s Gary Wilson, Humphrey had received a 70-point start.
He managed to scrape through by the closest of margins after taking the re-spotted black in the decider to prevail 3-2.
Taylor had a similar battle in his last-four clash against Whitley’s John Wear before winning 3-2.
There were two century runs for the highest break of the day award, both to Wilson – a 125 in round one and a 128 in round two.
The all-Whitley final of the plate competition was won by Gerry McNally, who clinched a 2-0 victory over Dale Allan. ■■WALLSEND potter Elliott Slessor produced another series of outstanding frames at Glasgow’s Dafabet Scottish Open – only going out in the last 16 4-3 to World No 3 Judd Trump.
Slessor
(pictured) got his campaign off the ground with a 4-2 first-round defeat of Scotland’s Rhys Clark.
He then progressed to the last 32 by beating China’s Mei XiWen 4-1.
Slessor had to then wait until the seventh and final frame before he could call himself a 4-3 winner against former world champion Peter Ebdon.
Gary Wilson ended his 4-2 firstround win over China’s Lyu Haotian with a break of 94 to reach round two, where he went out 4-3 after making a break of 73 in the final frame against China’s Xiao Gusdong.
Sam Craigie cruised past Thailand’s Boonyarit Keattikun 4-2 – only to go out in the second round to Trump, also 4-2.
John Astley suffered a 4-2 first-round defeat to Stoke’s Liam Highfield. ■■STAKEFORD A ended the first half of the Ashington Chisholm and LWC League season with a 6-0 full house against Seaton Terrace A.
That took them one point clear of long-time leaders Blyth Cons, who lost 4-2 to Newbiggin GC.
