Scunthorpe keep an eye on Longstaff

- By LEE RYDER

NEWCASTLE youngster Sean Longstaff is wanted by League One promotion chasers Scunthorpe United.

The 20-year-old has impressed watching scouts during his loan stint at Blackpool and has netted six goals in 23 appearances as well as providing six assists.

Longstaff has expressed an interest in staying with the Seasiders until the end of the season, but Newcastle could have a decision to make if the Iron make a loan bid on January 6 when his deal with Gary Bowyer’s side expires.

Longstaff actually scored against Scunthorpe on Boxing Day during a 3-2 defeat and he may face the choice of swapping a survival battle with Blackpool for a promotion push with the Glanford Park outfit.

Scunthorpe are currently sitting comfortably in a play-off place but are still very much in the hunt for automatic promotion under the guidance of Graham Alexander.

Longstaff is happy at Blackpool and Bowyer also commented earlier in the season: “He’s a great kid who has greatly changed physically and mentally in the time he’s been here.

“Long-term, he’s going to be a very good player.

“We’re delighted he chose to come and play football with us.

“He has a smile on his face day to day but he knows there are areas of his game he needs to improve on.

“He’d had a loan spell at Kilmarnock, so we were aware of him and we watched him in games.

“He’s done ever so well, he’s developing fabulously and he’s getting the game time, which is what he wanted.”
