Get travel sorted for New Year

Reporter HAVE you got your New Year’s Eve plans sorted?

It’s one thing deciding where to go or what to do - but it’s a whole other problem trying to get home.

There will be disruption across public transport services both on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day and we’ve got all the details here.

So, whether you want to avoid waiting in a taxi rank for an expensive black cab or plan some errands before some services shut down altogether, check out our comprehensive guide below.

On New Year’s Eve, the Metro will be running a normal Sunday service throughout the day until about 10pm.

After that, there will be services every 30 minutes until about 11pm that’s when the last train leaves Monument but it will differ slightly depending on your station.

On New Year’s day, there will be no Metro services.

All three of the North East’s main bus companies are operating similar patterns over New Year.

Go North East, Stagecoach and Arriva will run Sunday services on New Year’s Eve, with the last departures leaving at around 5pm or 6pm.

That means there will be no buses for most people after about 7pm. All three of the companies will be shutting down completely on New Year’s Day. Eve services will finish earlier than usual, with the last train to London King’s Cross leaving Newcastle at 5.49pm and the last King’s Cross to Newcastle service leaving at 8pm.

On New Year’s Day, trains will be running but to a reduced timetable so make sure you check before you travel (particularly if you’re travelling to Scotland as most services will terminate at Edinburgh).

Also note that ScotRail services will not be available all day if you’re planning on changing onto another service north of the border.

Grand Central - The company will operate a reduced timetable on New Year’s Eve, including a number of cancelled Sunderland to King’s Cross services, and will shut down completely on New Year’s Day.

Northern - From approximately 7pm on New Year’s Eve, Northern services will begin to shut down and most will be finished by 9pm.

The operator won’t be running any services in the Tyne/Tees region on New Year’s Day.

TransPennine Express - The company expects to run a normal service throughout the day on both December 31 and January 1.

N.B. Remember, the quiet New Year period often sees a lot of maintenance and engineering work happening on the rails.

Although there’s no major disruption planned in the North East, double check with Network Rail to make sure there’s none on your route that could slow you down.

There will be a normal service on New Year’s Eve but none on New Year’s Day.
